There was a time I believed urgency was proof. That if something ached enough, burned enough, surged through me unfiltered and wild, it must be true. I had not yet learned the difference between the body’s signal and the soul’s certainty. I mistook immediacy for intimacy. I thought pain was depth. I gave my heart to sparks, hoping their heat would become light. But not everything that moves you is meant to be followed. And not everything that cries out is speaking truth.
Rawness can feel like truth when we are desperate for meaning. It comes dressed as emotion, unregulated, unrefined, unchecked. It floods the system with need and calls it connection. It reaches not to see, but to possess. It clings in the name of closeness and demands in the name of love. But what it truly seeks is not presence, it is reassurance. It does not say, “I know you.” It says, “Prove you won’t leave.” Raw is not the flame. It is the flicker before the fire knows itself.
And I gave to it. I gave to longing disguised as loyalty. I gave to absence hoping it would transform into safety. I gave to questions that could never be answered, only repeated. I gave to the part of me that needed someone else to anchor what I had not yet claimed for myself. I poured breath into hunger, mistaking appetite for alignment. And it left me emptied, even as I gave.
But then came the stillness. The moment when the fire did not leave, but stopped consuming. It began to clarify. It asked for nothing. It simply revealed.
I have learned to give to what is real over what is raw.
Because rawness is loud, but unstable. It shouts, not to speak truth, but to fill the silence where truth would rather wait. It demands proximity without presence, affection without perception, touch without integrity. It says, “Hold me so I know I exist.” But the real says, “I am here, even if you never touch me.”
The real does not possess. It recognizes. It does not cling. It resonates. It holds its shape in absence. It does not require your body to know your soul. It is the hum that remains when the noise of need has quieted. It does not rush. It steadies. It does not collapse. It composes.
And now, I give only to what is real.
To what remains coherent when no one is watching. To what does not require performance to stay alive. To what clarifies instead of consumes. I give to what invites, not what begs. To what sharpens, not what shakes. To what reflects, not what demands to be filled.
Because I have learned:
Real is not louder than raw.
It’s just finally quiet enough for me to hear.
