Freedom For Life – On what it actually means to overcome

Spread the love

There is a word you have been using wrong. Not because you are careless with words, but because it was handed to you already broken, the way most of the important ones are. You inherited it in the shape that keeps you small. The word is overcome.

You think overcoming means getting past something. You think it means the hand that has been on your throat finally loosens, and you stagger forward into open air, and that open air is freedom. You have built your entire idea of change on this one picture. The escape. The break. The morning you wake up and the weight is simply gone.

I want to tell you something that will cost you the picture and give you the thing itself.

That is not overcoming. That is running.

Escape keeps the map

When you escape, you are still holding the map of the place you left. Escape is motion away, and motion away has a flaw built into its bones. It needs the thing it flees in order to have a direction at all.

Picture the man running out of a burning house. He is not free of the fire. He is defined by it in every stride. His speed is the fire’s speed. His direction is nothing but the opposite of where the fire is. Take the fire away and he is a man standing in a field with no reason to be running and no idea what to do with his legs.

This is how most people live after they believe they have gotten better. They escaped. They moved away. And they cannot understand why, years down the road, everything they touch still carries the smell of smoke.

You do not overcome a thing by leaving it. You carry the shape of it in the leaving.

Free from, free of

Then the language offers you two small words and calls them freedom.

Free from. Free of.

Listen to them. Free from anxiety. Free of the past. Free from him. Free of what they did to you. Every one of them points backward. Every one of them names the thing you do not want and then stands in the empty space where it used to be and calls the emptiness peace.

I understand why. When you have lived a long time under a weight, the first dream is always the absence of the weight. You do not dream of what you would build. You dream of the ceiling gone. The room quiet. The phone silent. For a while, freedom is only the list of things that finally stop.

But a life organized around what has stopped is still a life organized around what was. You have not left the room. You have turned off the light in it and called the dark a kind of peace.

Free from and free of will pull you out of the fire. They will never tell you what to do with your hands once you are standing in the field.

The turn

There is one more word, and it changes the whole direction of a life.

For.

Freedom for life.

Say it and feel where it points. Not backward at the thing you escaped. Forward. Toward. Freedom for means freedom aimed at something. Freedom in the service of a life you are actually going to live. Freedom that has somewhere to go and something to do when it gets there.

And there is a second thing hiding inside those three words, and it is the entire promise. For life.

Say it the other way now. Not freedom for the sake of your life. Freedom, for life. As in for good. As in the rest of it. As in this does not wear off.

You have had the other kind. The temporary kind. The retreat that lifted you for a weekend and set you back down in the same spot by Wednesday. The insight that felt like sunrise and was already gone by the time you reached the car. You have overcome things for an afternoon. You know the particular grief of watching your own freedom expire while you are still holding it.

For life means it holds.

You can tell which one you are living

You can tell which freedom you have by how tired you are.

The person who is free from spends the day managing. He watches the exits. He keeps the peace he fought for by staying alert to anything that might disturb it. His freedom is a thing he maintains, and maintenance is labor, so even his good days carry a low hum of effort underneath them that never fully quiets. He got out. He is still standing guard at the door he got out of.

The person who is free for does not guard the door. He has half forgotten the door is there. His attention is not behind him on the thing he left. It is in front of him on the thing he is making. Ask him what he overcame and he has to think for a moment, because it is not where he lives anymore. He does not organize his life around the fire. He organizes it around the field.

One of these men is recovering. The other is living. From the outside they can look identical for years. The whole difference is which direction they are facing.

You do not add. You remember

Here is the part that will sound strange until it is the only thing that makes sense.

You do not overcome by adding. You overcome by remembering.

Everything you were ever told about change assumes you are missing something. More discipline. More healing. A better version of you waiting at the far end of enough work. So you set out to become that person. You build him. You add and you add and you add, and the whole time you are exhausted, because building a self is exhausting work, and somewhere underneath all the construction you can feel the truth. None of it is load bearing.

So hear this plainly. You are not missing a self. You are buried under one.

Somewhere before the world got its hands on you, there was a you that did not perform. That did not manage the room. That did not brace before it entered. He is not gone. He was covered. Layer by layer, year by year, you were handed a face for every situation and told that wearing it was the same as living. It was not. It was survival wearing the costume of identity.

Overcoming is not the war you win against that pile. It is the excavation underneath it.

This is why it lasts. This is the for life. You cannot lose what you have remembered the way you lose what you built. A constructed self needs constant maintenance, constant defense, constant proof. A remembered self needs none of it. It was there before you began defending it and it will be there after you stop. You do not have to hold it up. It was holding you up the entire time.

There is a death in this

I will not pretend otherwise. The self you built to survive does not go quietly. He believes he is the reason you are still alive, and in a way he is right, because he got you this far. But he cannot get you any further. The very things that once kept you safe are the same things now keeping you small. And so at some point the excavation reaches him, and he has to go.

Here is the strangest mercy in all of it. When the false self finally dies, you do not die with him. You survive him. You stand at the edge of everything he was and you feel something you did not expect. Grief. You grieve the one who carried you.

That grief is not a sign that you failed. It is the proof that it worked. The one who died is the mask. The one doing the grieving is you. The real you. Present, and breathing, and finally not performing.

You will know you have overcome not when you feel triumphant. You will know it when you feel quiet.

The field, and your own two hands

You came here knowing none of my language, and I have used almost none of it, because you do not need the words to know the country. You have already stood at the edge of this. You have had the afternoon where something in you went still and honest and you thought, there I am, and then Monday came and took it back. You know the difference between escaping a room and belonging to yourself. Your body has known it the whole time. Nobody had to teach you the ache. They only taught you to mistake the exits for the door.

So let me say it the way I wish someone had said it to me.

You are not trying to get away from your life. You are trying to get to it.

Freedom from ends the pain. Freedom for begins the life. And freedom for life means the beginning does not expire. You do not have to win this again every morning. You have to remember it once, all the way down, and then live from what you found.

That is what it means to overcome. Not the escape. Not the absence. Not the thin quiet that comes after the thing finally stops.

The field. The open field, and your own two hands, and at last something worth doing with them.

For life.

This is James Tippins. This is UNBOUND. Freedom for life.

I am not becoming. I am remembering.
