I love music, all types, genres, and styles. I like music with lyrics and lyrics without music. Today I want to share my love for a few classic and contemporary hymns and why I love them. For the record, there are too many to list here and I have some that I absolutely love that I cannot remember the titles to. In time, I’ll share those with you.
Be Thou My Vision – This song establishes the truth of God’s absolute sovereignty and a cry to His power to secure our focus on Him and His power, promises, and purposes against all our foes.
The Church’s One Foundation – The bedrock of our glory is our Savior, Jesus Christ, the foundation of His people. The reality of Gospel purpose is revealed in the lyrics reminding us that we belong to Him and He purchased us with His death.
It Is Well With My Soul – No matter the suffering, destruction, or pain, the Lord is our strong tower, our rest, our peace, and our defender. Nothing can satisfy God’s love except the blood of Christ which has taken our sins completely, forever, done.
Come Thou Fount – This worshipful expressive song is one that I have rearranged musically in style. It’s one of my favorites and reminds me of the praise and glory due His name as He reminds us of His presence in every moment and season.
The Power of the Cross – While a newer song, the rich theology found in these lyrics are worthy of study. Christ has satisfied the wrath of God the Father in place of His people. Our name is in His book of life, written on His hands is our punishment. He stood for us. He died, we died, He lives, so we live.
Not In Me – There are few songs that avail to remind the church that she has no standing outside of Jesus Christ and His righteousness. There are not only no requirements for righteousness outside of the work of Christ, there are no necessary acts of obedience that should give us confidence before the father in a positive or negative sense. Christ alone, hallelujah.
How Firm a Foundation – This song starts with the root of our hope through the word of God. It reminds the church that we have a surety in Jesus and that God’s promise of this surety is found in Scripture alone – to which we would do well to pay attention.
Holy, Holy, Holy – It goes without saying that this classic song expresses the biblical truth of God being outside all things. I also have a stylistic variant on this song when I play it but the message and tune remains faithful to the blessed worship of our Holy, Holy, Holy God!
Oh Great God – This song is like a prayer to the Father to guide us by the Spirit to live a life worthy of the call of Grace. It is good that the church strives to live worthy of the name by which they have been saved. A great song.
My list is too long for this article today. I’ll share a few more as time allows. Anyone interested in hearing my original music or a cover of these, I am happy to oblige. Just put it in the comments.

Your inciteful explanation of the lyrics is like none I’ve read in any introduction to the hymns. The descriptions are instructional, as you beautifully highlight the particulars of the authentic gospel and the Church. Each builds upon the truth of the other, teaching, instructing, and inspiring.
The Lord is teaching me as I read your writings. They seem to speak to me from the text of God and bring confirmation of the truth to my mind and heart. They are in harmony with the Spirit, the anointing that teaches us the truth.
Thank you for sharing them with us.
I would love to hear your original music! I would also like to listen to your rearrangement of Come Thou Fount or any stylistic variants of a hymn.
Praise, Thanksgiving, and All Adoration to our blessed Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ!
[“20 But you have been anointed by the Holy One, and you all have knowledge. 21 I write to you, not because you do not know the truth, but because you know it, and because no lie is of the truth. 22 Who is the liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, he who denies the Father and the Son. 23 No one who denies the Son has the Father. Whoever confesses the Son has the Father also. 24 Let what you heard from the beginning abide in you. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, then you too will abide in the Son and in the Father. 25 And this is the promise that he made to us eternal life.
26 I write these things to you about those who are trying to deceive you. 27 But the anointing that you received from him abides in you, and you have no need that anyone should teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about everything, and is true, and is no lie—just as it has taught you, abide in him.”—1 John, Chapter 2]
And so we abide and rest in Christ!
We sing of His Absolute Sovereignty! His Impeccable Obedience! His purchase of us, the Church, by His agony and death! We are sealed in Christ by the covenant of His Blood, and nothing can separate us from His love! Oh, is the Power of The Cross! Christ took upon Himself all of our sins! The Power of the Cross! Took the blame! Bore the Wrath! We stand forgiven at the cross! We died with Christ, and we live in Him!
