Just because something is organic doesn’t make it worthy to eat.
Poop is organic.
When Robyn and I were in our twenties, we felt like organic things were not just healthy, we also felt they were essential to life. We were lied to and so were you. It happens often but we don’t realize it. I mean, what is a non-organic carrot? The answer? A plastic one.
Marketing happens all the time. We buy the assertion and the promise, or we don’t. For some, organic type eating and products are the labels of praise and contentment. But equating quality and price is fallacious. It’s ok, we all do it. The point of today is that we should pay attention rather than just blindly embrace everything we hear.
Recently a friend shared a video about a marketing agency that disguised a discount shoe brand as a new designer label. $15 shoes were priced under fancy lights and displays for $300 to $600 a pair. People came and shopped, expressing the value of such quality footwear. After many had paid 1000% more than the retail for the shoe, they were told about the branding and felt deceived.
This type of influence is a type of economic and mental slavery, thinking that you need something that you don’t just because of the perceived quality and need. Thinking that you are better off doing or having “x” when “x” is just the run-of-the-mill junk found anywhere else. Scarcity and fear of loss add to this type of ideology and birth a greater desire for the fear of missing out. This phenomenon doesn’t only happen with products and services, it is also found with politics and other philosophies and world views. It is especially true of the evangelical and religious culture, but I’ll talk about that in a future article.
Fearmongering gets people moving. If a group gets upset about something a wave of passion, excitement, and interest can flare without even knowing the validity of the issue. Does this happen to you? What are you most passionate about? Why? Are you free in your thinking and desires or have you been duped?
It is good to test what we feel and think. Measuring our silent assumptions and truth claims by the reality of truth and evidence helps us overcome emotionally-driven brainwashing. And if we cannot prove something, we should not be so quick to accept it. It is good to be skeptical, seek the truth, and stand therein, patiently and calmly.
As humans in community, we need to be critical but calm. We need to be collected and contemplative about everything. Just because there is smoke, or we think we smell smoke, doesn’t mean there is a fire. I have learned that very few things are urgent and even less require hurried responses or investments. If a matter isn’t immediately life-threatening, dealing with it can wait another hour, day, week, month, or year to discuss.
Why is patience and discovery so hard for the world around us? Because as a whole, humanity does not exist in a thinking state. It’s true. We seem to mosey around reacting rather than listening and observing. It feels better to our brains to react and make a mess rather than to watch and assess. Wisdom pays attention, listens, and only moves with great care and calculation.
If you think about all the messes that stirs around us, they are very small in comparison to the whole of one individual life. Even when trending on social media, a typical issue is only a huge concern among a very small demographic. But to that group, it is the center of the universe.
Do a little exercise: What is something that really got to you in the last year or two? Where is that issue today? Was it resolved? Did the world come to a halt? What changed? Most likely, your focus changed and it wasn’t as vital as it had been. The only thing that changed was that you were no longer involved in the middle of the mess. Typically, it’s a new mess, the same old poop, a different group of triggered people who aren’t thinking for themselves.
Who wins? The fight wins because those always in the debate lose. Being so concerned about everything keeps us from doing big things and having real relationships.
What are some things that you identify in your own life like this? What type of things triggers you over others?
I’m listening.

That recognition is where the work starts. A discovery call is one focused conversation: no pitch, no commitment. You leave knowing what is actually going on and whether working together makes sense.
