The Blessing Of Faith | Hebrews 11:11-12 | Week 41

.!.

Our GOAL with faith:

For the GLORY of GOD ALONE

What about us?  Are there personal benefits for faith?

“And [by] faith barren Sarah received power into [the] beginning of a nation and [though] of great age, because faithful she considered the one who is promising.”  Literal Greek Translation

Hebrews 11:11-12 (ESV)

11 By faith Sarah herself received power to conceive, even when she was past the age, since she considered him faithful who had promised.
12 Therefore from one man, and him as good as dead, were born descendants as many as the stars of heaven and as many as the innumerable grains of sand by the seashore.

By Faith – We see this continued in Chapter 11 of Hebrews

Faith brings blessings – For the Good of the Child of God

Sarah ‘believed’ God:  Trusted God and God enabled her body to conceive.
Impossible tasks are possible with God – “She was PAST the AGE”
“-If it were possible with us, we wouldn’t need God.”

Genesis 15:5 (ESV)
5 And he brought him outside and said, “Look toward heaven, and number the stars, if you are able to number them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring be.”

Genesis 18:10-15 (ESV)
10 The Lord said, “I will surely return to you about this time next year, and Sarah your wife shall have a son.” And Sarah was listening at the tent door behind him.
11 Now Abraham and Sarah were old, advanced in years. The way of women had ceased to be with Sarah.
12 So Sarah laughed to herself, saying, “After I am worn out, and my lord is old, shall I have pleasure?”
13 The Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh and say, ‘Shall I indeed bear a child, now that I am old?’
14 Is anything too hard for the Lord? At the appointed time I will return to you about this time next year, and Sarah shall have a son.”
15 But Sarah denied it, saying, “I did not laugh,” for she was afraid. He said, “No, but you did laugh.”

1 Peter 3:6 (ESV)
6 as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord. And you are her children, if you do good and do not fear anything that is frightening.

FAITH brings blessing – For the Good of Mankind (Not by the power of man)

12 Therefore from one man, and him as good as dead, were born descendants as many as the stars of heaven and as many as the innumerable grains of sand by the seashore.

NOT by the POWER of Man:
“therefore” a man was able to bring forth children as he was promised
Abraham and Sarah were POWERLESS to assist in the fulfillment of the promise

Romans 4:19 (ESV)
19 He (Abraham) did not weaken in faith when he considered his own body, which was as good as dead (since he was about a hundred years old), or when he considered the barrenness of Sarah’s womb.

Abraham TRIED through HAGGAR – promise of offspring given to Ishmael, but not eternal life through the descendents of Ishmael
Abraham continued after Sarah

Genesis 25:1-2 (ESV)
1 Abraham took another wife, whose name was Keturah.
2 She bore him Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah.

Herbie Goes Bananas rip

Romans 9:7 (ESV)
7 and not all are children of Abraham because they are his offspring, but “Through Isaac shall your offspring be named.”

We benefit most by TRUSTING completely in the sufficiency of God in all things – for His purpose.

FAITH brings blessings – For the Glory of God

Isaac was for God’s plan, not Sarah’s pleasure although it brought her happiness.

Verse 11 “since she considered HIM faithful who had promised.”

HOLDING FAST TO THE FAITHFUL ONE

Hebrews 10:23 (ESV)
23 Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful.
THEME of the chapter!  FAITHFULNESS of GOD, not man.

REAPING THE REWARD OF FAITH – EVERLASTING COVENANT
Genesis 17:19 (ESV)
19 God said, “No, but Sarah your wife shall bear you a son, and you shall call his name Isaac. I will establish my covenant with him as an everlasting covenant for his offspring after him.

FAITHFULNESS of God brings more than we expect or can often see

Exodus 32:13 (ESV)
13 Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, your servants, to whom you swore by your own self, and said to them, ‘I will multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven, and all this land that I have promised I will give to your offspring, and they shall inherit it forever.’ “

Genesis 21:2 (ESV)
2 And Sarah conceived and bore Abraham a son in his old age at the time of which God had spoken to him.

Romans 9:7 (ESV)
7 and not all are children of Abraham because they are his offspring, but “Through Isaac shall your offspring be named.”

A child for some
A family for others
A generation
A nation

A BODY redeemed through Christ!

God’s plans are always deeper than we perceive them

WE can trust God’s Character – even when we cannot trust our own
We can trust God’s Cause – even when we don’t see the future results
We can trust God’s Conditions – even when ours are not matching reality

Faithfulness of God brings blessings (approval) for all who believe – Israel

Genesis 12:3 (ESV)
3 I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”

Galatians 3:8 (ESV)
8 And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, “In you shall all the nations be blessed.”

Romans 9:6-8 (ESV)
6 But it is not as though the word of God has failed. For not all who are descended from Israel belong to Israel,
7 and not all are children of Abraham because they are his offspring, but “Through Isaac shall your offspring be named.”
8 This means that it is not the children of the flesh who are the children of God, but the children of the promise are counted as offspring.

Galatians 3:7-9 (ESV)
7 Know then that it is those of faith who are the sons of Abraham.
8 And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, “In you shall all the nations be blessed.”
9 So then, those who are of faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith.

Galatians 3:16 (ESV)
16 Now the promises were made to Abraham and to his offspring. It does not say, “And to offsprings,” referring to many, but referring to one, “And to your offspring,” who is Christ.

Galatians 3:29 (ESV)
29 And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to promise.

Galatians 4:28 (ESV)
28 Now you, brothers, like Isaac, are children of promise.
